The Ups & Downs of Life & Fitness: How to Overcome setbacks

Joey Atlas / August 7, 2017

The Ups & Downs of Life & Fitness: How to Overcome Setbacks and Challenges

“Life Is Difficult”

That’s the very first line in the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED book: The Road Less Traveled, by M. Scott Peck

Now, I won’t spoil the book and the life-changing impact it can have on you, by giving you the next few lines, but I will say that I totally agree with line #1 and the sentences that follow it up…

There’s a very high chance you’ll agree too, that yes, in fact, Life Is Difficult…

I surely agree, because my life has been difficult at times… very dark and very difficult – and out of all the people I’ve met in my life, I might be able to count the ones who’ve had an “easy” life on one hand… maybe.

But in the last few years, I’ve grown into the realization that this “difficult life” is also a miracle and a blessing. And that true perspective changes the game.

In essence, it changes the meaning of “Life Is Difficult” in a way that makes life VERY worth living, despite the inevitable challenges that will arise.

By design, life is meant to be difficult (at times). It is designed to challenge us, to push us, to “awaken” us to the reality that our lives will be what we make of them, and also how we think of them.

This is a common struggle that not only takes most people off the right path – but it’s the element that also often prevents many people from even taking the first step to self-care and accepting complete responsibility for one’s own condition, primarily health condition. So…

Today’s Short Article Is Intended to Help You With This Common Struggle

I share some more of my backstory, and ‘lessons learned’ in hopes of inspiring you and anyone else you know who can use the fuel for motivation…

Recently some fantastic ‘old’ photos surfaced, via my first wife… And in looking at them, I was reminded of the deeply challenging phases of life I had been through, and how far I’ve come, in certain regards.

Here is one of those photos I posted on Instagram over the weekend, which I combined with a relatively recent “progress” photo of me and JoJo, 20 years later…

At 27 I was in a very challenging place personally, but was living one of my dreams; to be a young dad. This was during one of my personal valleys, struggling to find balance… Eventually found it, plus more. In the process managed to set the example for the kids. Here's a shot of where things have gone. The lesson: everything you do is very likely to directly impact those closest to you. What example are you setting? More to come… . . . . #fitnessexpert #mindset #livingthelife #positiveinfluence #selflove #selfimage #selfawareness #doitforyou #doitforyourself #doitforyourkids #fitnesscoach #fitdad #fitdads #positivemindset #chooseyourdestiny #livewithpurpose #dontbelazy #aginginreverse #fitnessblog #fitnesspodcast #fitnessjourney #bodymindandspirit #bodyweightfitness #bodyforlife #noexcusesjustresults #priorities

You might be able to see it in my eyes…

I was in a challenging place, personally. And physically, well – I was far from where I wanted to be at that point in life. And internally – my annual exams were getting worse (blood pressure rising, cholesterol rising, triglycerides rising, and more…)

My body was hurting, literally hurting. Major back aches and pains, neck issues, shoulders, knees…

There was more inner turmoil that I’ll go deeper into in the future. Suffice to say I was battling life hard.

But don’t get me wrong here though, because there was incredible joy with being a new, young father with JoJo being born. In that I had achieved one of my life goals – to be a young dad, so I can have ‘younger years’ and experiences with the kids in the future, just like you see in that inset workout/posing photo.

There were more difficulties along the way, some you may remember from other blog posts over the last 11 years, and some I’ve yet to share.

But, as I moved through my late 20, through my 30’s and now slowly, gratefully, living through my 40’s – I always made sure the inner fire, the deep inner desire to value and honor my health, my wellness, the gift of life I’ve been given – was always brewing no matter what and when tough times were upon me I either kept pushing through with my personal commitment – or I made sure “I came back” after I had let myself go, due to the circumstances and pressures of life that I had brought upon myself…

Below is a recent photo I posted on Instagram. It’s a snap shot of one of the ending band moves for one of my arm training sessions.

I posted the photo above and the photo below, to share with you, to show you – that despite life’s ups and downs – positive personal progress can still be made. While the photos only give you a glimpse of the “physical” – you can bet there has been MUCH mental, emotional and spiritual progress over the last 20 years as well…

Even just looking at my medical profile from the last 3 years of annual physical exams (that video appointment and results reading with Dr Osborne is right here if you wish to see it), is proof that we can heal, strengthen, rebuild and improve (a.k.a. aging in reverse) even AFTER MIDDLE-AGE…

Life-enhancing Fitness doesn't have to be complicated or painful. A combo of proper exercise and eating the way nature intended the body to be fed makes some miraculous things happen. Trust me ? The right approach is the game changer, but everything starts in your mind. Nothing gets better until your thoughts do. . . . . #fitover40 #mindfulmovement #thinker #fitdads #wiseman #beentheredonethat #middleageshred #middleagefitness #getyourgrooveback #healthyhabits #valueyourself #selfimage #selfishlove #becomeyourbest #fitnessmaster #fitbodyandmind #fitforhealth #inspirehealth #noexcusesperiod #notv #fitnessexpert

How is it that I’ve been able to “get better with age”, when most other people go in the opposite direction?

There’s no special reason… Nothing that makes it possible for me and impossible for anybody else.

I simply faced the fact that “Life Is Difficult” and I could either fold, fall victim, and give in to the difficulties.. Or I could accept the difficulties of human life, know they will come and go, and set my priorities based on my true values, that dictate my mindset, my habits and my actions.

Life still presents its difficulties. Life is not always easy. So, just knowing this can be enough to position oneself mentally so that difficulties are not a surprise, and can be more easily worked through.

Additionally, with age comes wisdom, or at least it should if we are open to becoming wiser – and if this is the case, then the difficulties can become less frequent and less painful. That’s a post for another day, but it does offer a truth – one that presents the notion, and reality, that life can be “less difficult” as we learn our way along the great journey.

In closing, at least for now, I can share with you that I’ve handled my ups and downs, no matter how painful or dark, by always coming back to my personal values, my core purpose and my deepest faith in the goodness of life.

The act of “returning to center” has been how I’ve been able to overcome the difficult episodes, to navigate through them (sometimes doing some deep introspection and action taking) – or sometimes, to simply “hold on” until they’ve passed…

Part of my deepest core value set has been a transformation of honoring the body only for the sake of the body (back in the teen years when I first started in this fitness realm) – all the way to honoring the body for the sake of the “whole” self…

Respecting the body as the “vehicle or vessel” that we’ve been gifted with, to carry us through this one life. Always returning to optimum self-care, with consistent self-awareness – has kept me tuned into, and connected to, my ‘self’.

Anti Aging by Stretching, Supplement Obsession, Parents Unfit, Bone Strengthening preview photo TFW 9

Anti-Aging with Flexibility, Supplement Obsessions, Mom & Dad Need Fitness, Stronger Bones Naturally

Based on fans, followers, clients and subscribers sharing their input, we decided to do a “Q & A” styled interview for Episode #9 of The Fitness Whisperer Podcast…

So after gathering some of the various questions submitted on my blogs, Facebook pages, via email, via Instagram, etc… we pulled 4 to start with.

And if this gets a good response and solid feedback (please share YOUR feedback in the comment box at bottom of this page), we’ll do more of these Q & A styled Podcast Episodes and Candid Cam videos as we roll “The Atlas Movement” forward…

Here’s just a taste of what we cover in this “Atlas Candid Cam” video version of The Fitness Whisperer Podcast Episode # 9

1 – Melissa and Brad ask about their middle-age, parenting stage of life conundrum and how to STOP getting out of shape and turn things around in a realistic way.

2 – Joey’s Dating Profile Project Proposal by Nikki and MasterCoach MaryAnne (this is part of the “WILD Adventure Quest of Love Project” that may become a true REALITY… still have to think this one over, lolz…)

3 – Dave and Liz ask what to add after, in addition to, ‘flexibility’ and stretching to keep their anti-aging fitness improvements coming, not just for golf and tennis, but for ALL aspects of life and maintaining full functionality.

4 – Lisa asks about her son’s supplement problems and overkill. The ‘millennial’ market is the next frontier for supplement companies to pitch their pills, powders and potions to… While there are some good products out there, there is FAR MORE trash, risky products, and plenty of deception-based marketing… I give you the simple scoop in my answer to Lisa.

5 – Elaine asks about strengthening bones naturally and improving bone density to prevent, or reverse, osteoporosis.

Any questions, comments or thoughts? Post below, I’d love to hear from you.

Maybe a question you’d like answered in a future episode?? Post it below…

And while you’re watching, please use the ‘easy’ buttons below to share today’s video lesson with ANYONE and everyone you know who can use some positive and kind-hearted help with their health, fitness and mindset.

Doctor Reviews Uncommon Anti-Aging Results and Answers STD Question

Doctor Reviews Uncommon Anti-Aging Results and Answers Rare STD Question

Deeper Details and Actionable Specifics Coming In Blog Article Soon

While you absorb the insights and info revealed in the private doctor visit video, please keep in mind, I’m working on a full blog article that goes into much deeper details about the specific things I’ve been doing over the last 2 years to make the things happen that you’ll hear from the doctor as he reviews my key health indicators and their changes over the last 2 years.

I’ll create a “Health Hero Checklist” that you’ll be able to print and refer to, and include the link in the full blog post article, most likely next week, so check back in for that here.

For example, I’ll share a few of the simple but critical tools I use to “monitor” my internal stats, week to week, month to month – to make sure I’m staying “in the zone” of optimal health, wellness and longevity.

I’ll share one of those tools right here, so you can get started as well: This is the body-fat monitor I use to track my body-composition (MUCH more important than just tracking your weight on a scale.)

It is the same one my Team uses in the SCULPTAFIT Studios and it’s the same one I use when doing 1-on-1 fitness consulting/coaching with private clients.

Here’s a tight summary of the Vital Health Markers I was screened for. These are the ‘paper’ numbers Dr. Osborn compares year to year.

Except for the PSA, These Are All Important for Men and Women

Blood Lipid Profile:
– Cholesterol
– Cholesterol Ratios
– Triglycerides

Uric Acid

GFR – Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate

CMP – Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

PSA – Prostate Specific Antigen

TSH – Thyroid-stimulating Hormone

CBC – Complete Blood Count

We also talk about a few other critical factors as well – which I’ll be sharing in the full article/blog post coming soon.

Dr Osborn Reviews His 5 Pillars of Health
{Summary to be posted soon}

I passed on getting the STD panel this year. And in the video you’ll hear my question regarding an extended period of sexual inactivity and 2 STD panels coming back clean as a whistle during that period, and next steps as I look forward…

Below are the 2 pages of the complete blood panel for this year’s check-up. Notice over on the left margin, my notes about the Total Chol/HDL ratio being 2.02 – that is something to be happy about, and a great marker to calculate on your own, as many panels don’t report that automatically.

Not a big deal, since it’s a very simple calculation of Total Cholesterol divided by the HDL’s (the high density lipoproteins, which are the “good” ones)

Alrighty… There’s a lot of helpful info and advice that comes through in the candid video footage. So please take some notes, and then share this page with anyone you know who can use the advice and insights we share.

Middle-Age Motivation Annual Physical Exam and Blood Panel Preview 2017

Joey Atlas / April 24, 2017

Middle-Age Motivation: Annual Physical Exam and Blood Panel Preview 2017

Consider this the first segment of the “Middle-Age Motivator” series…

These things just keep coming to me the more I get into all this great stuff… Feels awesome to be able to share this and know it is appreciated and positively impacting lives around the world.

It’s my Annual Physical Exam and Blood Panel Preview for 2017.

And in this video I also give you a preview of me “throwing down the gauntlet”…

{throw down the gauntlet} meaning => “to declare or issue a challenge”

In an upcoming video I’ll officially throw down the gauntlet and issue the challenge…

I will challenge the aging process, I will kindly and lovingly challenge YOU to join me NO MATTER where you’re at right now and no matter what your goals are…

We will travel the journey together…

I will challenge the norms.

The ‘norm’ sounds something like this; Most people, about 88% of the population, ignoring their health and fitness and all hanging out together joking about it, complaining about all the things going wrong, taking the “medications the doctor prescribed”… Blah, Blah, Blah, until ‘Mike’ or ‘Lisa’ or ‘Dave’ or ‘Lauri’ or ‘so and so’ has a massive hearth attack or stroke in their 50’s and THEN everyone gets freakin’ scared… possibly enough to even do something proactive… That’s a story for another video…

I will challenge the mainstream, the conventional, traditional ‘force-fed’ approaches…

I will CONTINUE to challenge all the phony trash, snake-oil scams, high-priced/high-risk surgical solutions (I’m ok with surgical solutions, BUT, when and where appropriate)… and shallow offers of quick results and effortless transformations.

I used to be on the ‘roller coaster’ until I realized I needed to get off, get centered and get grounded in REALITY… in my truth.

Only then was I able to start learning “the true way” to the best me – inside and out.

Dysfunction, codependencies and psychological crutches begin to disappear and can fade away the more “re-connected” you get with your physical self…

The more you realize all your answers are inside you – the more you realize that things outside of you have less and less power over you…

And the tables begin to turn in your favor, because YOU are guiding your thoughts and actions according to your strengthening values and most important goals.

More to come…

One Last Thing

Please share your thoughts, comments or questions in the Comment Box below. You know I love hearing from you.

And please use the ‘easy’ buttons below to share today’s “Candid Cam” video with your friends, family and co-workers.

You never know whose life you might save by sharing a strong dose of loving inspiration and fuel for motivation…

Onward we go,
Joey

Fitness Breakthroughs, Insights and Evolutions at Middle-Age and Beyond

At least twice a month we have a private Team Empowerment Session in the SCULPTAFIT Studio…

This is one of the 2-4 times per month I’m here with the Team, as they are Aces at running the Studio as a cohesive Team, while I handle the bigger picture marketing, content production and overall progress strategy from a number of offsite locations… (home office, coffee shop, on the road while traveling for consulting & coaching assignments, etc…)

{VIDEO BEING RE-EDITED for ENHANCEMENTS – check back soon!!}

This “fly on the wall” video was recorded by my Ultra-Youthful “on the spot” interns, Tanner and Ellie – the two amazing daughters of Master Coach MaryAnne… This was the first time they ever shot video, so please be forgiving of some of the Candid Cam movements 🙂

Ultimately you’ll want to listen to what is being shared, as we each reveal personal evolutions, client breakthroughs and fitness evolutions that will surely inspire you and fuel your personal motivation for positive, life-improving action, in ALL areas of LIFE.

Let us know what you thought of what we shared, and if you have any questions, comments, we’d LOVE to hear from you. Just post in the comment box below 🙂

And please do use these ‘easy’ buttons to share today’s video with anyone you wish, no matter where they are in the world. The more people we reach the more we can help. You never know who’s life you will positively impact by a simple sharing gesture of something good.
