As a veteran fitness pro and private health coach I’ve been in all types of home and office gyms, ranging from a “tight NYC apartment” all the way up to the palatial Greenwich, CT estate of Leona and Harry Helmsley

..and everything in between.

I’ve seen many great home gyms, with well-planned layouts and equipment selection…

And I’ve seen many bad ones… poorly designed, with faulty choices of specific equipment and home-gym machines.

If you’re planning a purchase of a home-gym package – then this article may prove to be a proverbial life-saver for you…

Today I share 5 of the top mistakes I’ve helped clients fix over the last 26 years…

The 5 Costliest & Dangerous Home-Gym Buying Mistakes

Mistake #1: You Overspend and Waste Too Much Money

Fitness equipment sales reps and misleading magazine articles can steer you in the wrong direction for many reasons.

Going down the wrong path often leads to spending too much money. For example, one of the most sold items is the ‘treadmill’. BUT, it should actually be 3rd or 4th on the list when in the early stages of your home-gym master-plan.

Treadmills have a FAT profit margin because of the volume in production, and since most people think a treadmill is a ‘necessity’, they are an easy sell.

Truth is, most people who have a treadmill don’t even need one for proper cardio. That $2,500.00 could have been used for something else of higher importance. Plus there’s also the “space” saving issue…

Mistake #2: Buying the Wrong Equipment for Your Specific Needs

Most people buy home fitness equipment and home-gyms based on ‘assumptions’, without properly consulting a qualified fitness coach to help them determine their goals and needs, first.

Mistake #3: Buying Cheap Models of Mass Market Exercise Machines

Buying on “low price” will end up costing you more later. Either by you not using the crappy equipment you bought – or by you going “beast mode” on it and getting injured…

Well, there’s no need to “go beast mode” and there’s no need to get hurt when you have the right plan aimed at the right goals… When these are in order – you end up buying a home-gym set-up that is “JUST RIGHT”…

Mistake #4: No Planning and Bad Use of Space in Your Home Fitness Area

Cram too much home-gym equipment into your space and you just took away one of the most valuable elements…

You need open space for certain things… Flexibility, body-weight cardio, etc… Don’t overcrowd your home-gym… It defeats the purpose.

Mistake #5: Buying Uncomfortable Fitness Equipment That You HATE Using

Pain and discomfort are two of the BIGGEST “motivation killers” known to humans.

So why buy anything that is going to cause you pain and discomfort?

Silly question – but people do this every day… and they quit their personal fitness program within a few weeks or months. Not a good plan…

How to Food Shop Like a Fitness Pro In Record Time

I love teaching people “how to food shop”…

For some it’s a TOTAL game-changer, and for others, it simply adds new options and strategies to an already strong style of “grocery management”

It’s something I used to do as a specific service for individuals and families back in my ‘one on one’ training days…

But this one was for a “Bonus Extra Event” for the ladies of our local SCULPTAFIT Studio… And I turned on the ‘Voice Recorder’ app during the tour and then uploaded it to youtube so I can share it with all our clients who could not make it that day – and to also share it with you…

Here are a few of the key take-aways some of the women made note of (there are a bunch more so keep listening):

1 – Pre-purchase all staple items from Bulk Warehouses (Costco, etc) and/or online sources, such as Amazon, Thrive Market (20% Off Orders Today), etc…

KEY TIP: Use “monthly auto-ship” on the items you use on a regular basis. By doing this, you usually get preferred pricing, and cuts down on the amoutn you need to buy when you go food shopping – hence making those local trips faster and easier.

2 – If you’re addicted to diet sodas, GET OFF ASAP… (you DO NOT want to keep consuming the chemical sweeteners in those)

They have a bunch of amazing flavors, including decaf Cola.

3 – Frozen Veggies and Fruits are a #1 item to “Have On Hand”

Lots of people still don’t know that “frozen” fruits and veggies are awesome for you.

They think that since they are not “fresh”, something is sacrificed… which is not true.

Most of my veggies start as ‘frozen’ from the freezer. Having s full supply of bulk bags from Costco makes eating right so EASY.

I’m all for fresh ones of course – BUT, in a busy hectic life, having a stash of frozen items ready to steam or sautee is a life-saver.

4 – Many supermarkets are “cleaning up” their salad bars and hot food counters. Leverage These Regularly…

For example, the store where did the Food Tour in the audio above, Earth Fare, has an incredible selection of salads and prepared foods…

THE KEY is to still be mindful of choices and volume.

My point in mentioning this is that it gives you another viable option when your days get tight and you have no time to cook…

You can stop by a market on the way home from work, pick up what you need, in the amount that suits you and your family – and BOOM, dinner is done and you’re still “in the zone” when it comes to your healthy nutrition.

5 – One way to avoid certain destructive foods or beverages is to simply “drop them” from your personal menu.

For example – about 18 months ago, I decided to “drop” alcoholic beverages for good.

Now, when I roll through the market – I don’t spend any time in the wine, or craft beer section because I don’t consume any of those. My food shops are even more simplified because of that – and ‘life is better’ (saves me a lot of money too) 🙂

OK – you might remember me mentioning the ‘patent pending’ “MINI” toning device that can fit in your purse, and enhances the effects you get when you use my lower-body, problem-area programs…

Washboard 6 Pack Abs and Core Cardio Jump Rope Fat Burner Workout

There are still “dinosaur” ab machines in the health clubs and fitness centers.

But there’s not much I can do about that, except share all the good & helpful material I possibly can with you – and anyone else you can share this with…

You’ll notice – no fast sit-ups, no neck-pulling crunches, no silly leg throws… None of that mass-market nonsense.

You will see a highly effective, SUPER-safe abs/core/low-back training session that is adding power to my abilities, strength in EVERYTHING I do and future independence for decades to come.

Enjoy the sequence of exercises, make note of the steady form, controlled tempo, pauses, synergy, minimal/short rest times between exercises and the absence of all the mythological ab exercises.

How to Get Sculpted and Strong Shoulders at Home

The best shoulder workouts are also the simplest and safest… The problem is, most fitness training sources don’t know what that means.

Fortunately, I do – and since you’re here – you will soon know too 🙂

There’s no shortage of “same old, same old”, recycled exercises being regurgitated by ‘youtube fitness stars’ and ‘instagram trainers’… It’s sad to see, but it’s one of the inherent realities we must face in a day and age where EVERYONE can have a voice…

Your challenge is to DISCERN what is high-quality from what is NOT high-quality… Being that you are here, I can sense you know what ‘quality’ information is…

So – with that in mind, you WILL NOT see the following exercises in the Shoulder Training video above:

No Upright rows
No straight-arm lateral raises
No Bent-over, bilateral rear-delt raises
No behind the neck barbell presses
No overheard shoulder machine presses

None of that joint-jamming, body-busting “hardcore workout” nonsense…

4 Important Aspects of LIIT Fitness Training In This Shoulder Training Session

1 – Slow, controlled movements

This removes momentum from the exercises and lets the muscles do all the work. The muscle fibers get stimulated in a shorter amount of time, with FAR less risk of injury, FAR less post-workout aches and pains and more results to show for the time and effort invested in the session

2 – Pause holds at certain parts of each exercise

This allows the muscles to fully engage in isometric positions. It also helps in reducing/removing momentum from the equation. And it also enhances the mind-body connection both in the specific movements, and life in general.

3 – Minimal rest between sets

This is another highlight of LIIT (Low-Intensity Interval Training). We go from exercise to exercise, only taking a short breather if/when needed. This triggers the cardio-conditioning/fat-burn benefits, and reduces the amount of time needed for any given training session.

4 – Synergistic combinations

The combining of exercises both in grouping and in sequence result in a synergistic effect that produces results. Again, more thorough stimulation of muscle fibers in a shorter amount of time, with less unnecessary stress on the joints and ‘the mind’.
